Property of a Lady: An Important Cello by Nicolo Gagliano, Naples, circa 1750

Bearing the original label: Nicolaus Gagliano Filius Alexandri Fecit Neap. 1750

Bearing another label dedicated to the Virgin Mary: In Conceptione tua Virgo Maria Immaculata fuis. Ora pro nobie patre, cujus Filiu Jesum de Sp.s. peperi...

The two-piece back of medium flame ascending from the centre, the ribs and scroll of similar flame, the table of medium to fine grain narrowing towards the centre.
The plentiful varnish of a rich golden orange-brown colour.
The original neck, which has been re-angled at the heel.
The cello is in a very fine state of preservation.
Length of back: 751mm
A dendrochronology from Peter Ratcliff dates the latest rings at 1728 and 1738. Cross matches include various Stradivari, del Gesu, Bergonzi and Guadagnini instruments.
In 2011 Brompton’s sold a similar example by Nicolo Gagliano dated 1774, and in much the same amazing condition.
